BART: Bay Area Rapid Transit
Environmental Design

The use of English for cardinal points on BART system maps and schedules was confusing to infrequent and foreign riders and required a fairly good understanding of geographical landmarks and English. The challenge was to create a color based schedule that was flexible enough to accommodate new stations and service lines. The solution was to remove the cardinal points, de-emphasize the terminus cities, prioritize the train lines, and integrate the train line color system into the schedules. Creating destination headers highlighting line colors, we were able to create a visual link for which train to take. We improved the readability of the time table by placing the hour across the top and departure minutes below. Paami served as a designer while at Bruning & Associates on this project.
